{"id":1165,"date":"2020-01-12T03:48:05","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T03:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/?p=1165"},"modified":"2021-08-15T04:41:01","modified_gmt":"2021-08-15T04:41:01","slug":"teaching-harriet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/2020\/01\/12\/teaching-harriet\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Harriet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kasi Lemmons\u2019s biographical movie <strong><em>Harriet<\/em><\/strong> was a box office sensation in 2019.&nbsp; There has been both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/bayarea\/article\/Harriet-Tubman-Movie-Celebrated-Debated-14858630.php\">outcry and support<\/a> for the film with some viewers homing in on points of historical accuracy as well as the choice of lead.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Harriet-Movie-Poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1166\" width=\"506\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Harriet-Movie-Poster.jpg 674w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Harriet-Movie-Poster-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><figcaption>Image source: IMDb.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Debates aside, the fact of Harriet being the first big screen depiction of Tubman makes it likely that it<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>will be used to teach history in homes and classrooms for years to come. &nbsp; This being so, context is key. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a collection of books that parents and teachers can use to help youth round out their understanding of the complex world that existed in Harriet Tubman\u2019s time.
