{"id":952,"date":"2019-04-05T12:48:57","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T12:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/?p=952"},"modified":"2021-08-15T03:06:45","modified_gmt":"2021-08-15T03:06:45","slug":"csk-book-awards-a-csk-juror-reflects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/2019\/04\/05\/csk-book-awards-a-csk-juror-reflects\/","title":{"rendered":"CSK Book Awards: A CSK Juror Reflects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Four days after winning a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award for <em>The Hate U Give<\/em>, Angie Thomas attracted over 500 patrons to Downtown Cleveland.\u00a0 Not only was this one of the most significant author events the library had witnessed in a while, but it was also the most diverse.\u00a0\u00a0 Several generations of book lovers of all colors came to hear Angie speak; some drove hours from out of town to be present.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-949\" width=\"323\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><figcaption><em>Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium <br>Photo Credit: The Cleveland Public Library<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On a cold Saturday morning in Cleveland, Ohio, in February 2018, a line formed in front of the Cleveland Public Library\u2019s Louis Stokes Wing auditorium doors two hours before they were scheduled to open.\u00a0 An abundance of local high school students, college students, professors, and neighborhood book club members from the Fair Fax community were dropped off by the bus.\u00a0 Auditorium seats became scarce, overflow seating began to fill up inside the Indoor Reading Garden, followed by seating on the second floor.\u00a0 Unfortunately, once we reached the maximum capacity of 500, patrons had to be turned away.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas\u2019 presentation was just as raw\nand humorous as her debut novel, as she spoke on her love for the Cleveland\nCavaliers and the movie Black Panther, released the same weekend of her visit\nto Cleveland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shooting death of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old black man killed by a police officer at Fruitvale BART Station, motivated Thomas to create this novel, which began as a short story.\u00a0 Thomas explained the title, which is inspired by Tupac Shakur\u2019s T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E. tattoo, <em>The Hate U Give<\/em> Little Infants F*s Everyone.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks2-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-953\" width=\"250\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks2-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks2-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks2-1-768x1151.jpg 768w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks2-1.jpg 1281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption><em>Angie Thomas<br>Photo Credit: The Cleveland Public Library<\/em><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Last year, more than 900 people were killed by police.\u00a0 People should care more about that number than the number of f-words.&#8221; Thomas said, after discussing the banning of her book in a suburban school district in Texas and how students fought to get T.H.U.G. back on the shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question of colorism in selecting Amandla Stenberg in the Fox 2000 film did arise.\u00a0 Thomas informed the oversized crowd, just as she did on Twitter that she was not involved in casting but fully supported Stenberg and hoped people would give her a chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In closing, Thomas addressed young\npeople in the audience, informing them that their actions mold the future.&nbsp; Thomas let the crowd of 500 plus know,\n&#8220;I am here to beg you to change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having served on the 2016-2018 Coretta Scott King Book Awards jury, I am cognizant of thoughts jurors may have; that great feeling of knowing your team got it right.\u00a0\u00a0 This author event, which is still discussed until this day, was proof that Angie&#8217;s book was as powerful as our committee believed it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-951\" width=\"289\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/csk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EMarks3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><figcaption><em>Erica Marks and Angie Thomas<br>Photo Credit: The Cleveland Public Library<\/em><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Hate U Give<\/em> is one of many titles representing the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.\u00a0 After Angie Thomas\u2019 author visit, the Cleveland Public Library hosted an author event featuring Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Honor Winners for Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut, Derrick Barnes and Gordon C. James in partnership with Case Western Reserve University Schubert Center for Child Studies, The Cleveland Foundation and Anisfield Book Awards.
