{"id":174,"date":"2017-03-14T02:19:25","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T02:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/sustainrt\/?p=174"},"modified":"2017-10-02T16:46:25","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T16:46:25","slug":"amy-brunvard-candidate-for-coordinator-elect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olos.ala.org\/sustainrt\/2017\/03\/14\/amy-brunvard-candidate-for-coordinator-elect\/","title":{"rendered":"Amy Brunvand &#8211; Candidate for Coordinator-Elect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear SustainRT Members,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m running for Coordinator-Elect of SustainRT and I\u2019d like to ask for your vote. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am an academic librarian at the University of Utah with a specialty in government information (think environmental policy and citizen engagement). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may remember my name from the 2016 SustainRT ballot. \u00a0I didn\u2019t win last year, but I got enough votes to feel encouraged and losing the election led me to seek another way to engage with sustainability. \u00a0\u00a0I have spent the past year on leave from the campus library working as an embedded librarian out of the University of Utah Sustainability Office. \u00a0I recently presented a webinar for SustainRT about this experience: \u201cSTARS and Beyond: Adventures of an Embedded Librarian in the Campus Sustainability Office.\u201d ( <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/sustainrt\/2017\/02\/24\/upcoming-sustainrt-webinar-march-9th-1215-1245-pm-est\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/olos.ala.org\/sustainrt\/2017\/02\/24\/upcoming-sustainrt-webinar-march-9th-1215-1245-pm-est\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u00a0At the moment I\u2019m immersed in sustainability issues and I would be able to step into the Coordinator-Elect role full of fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My main effort in the Sustainability Office was helping to compile the AASHE STARS Report for the University of Utah (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stars.aashe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/stars.aashe.org\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0STARS details campus-wide sustainability efforts, and identifies areas for improvement. \u00a0Since the University of Utah is the size of a small city it was a huge undertaking. \u00a0\u00a0From this experience I have a deeper appreciation for the process of shifting organizations from business-as-usual towards sustainable action. \u00a0I am more than ever convinced that libraries have an essential information role to play in this transition. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I describe myself as a \u201cguerrilla librarian,\u201d since I try to take library values out into the wider community. \u00a0Since 2001 I have written a monthly environmental news column for Catalyst Magazine, (https:\/\/www.catalystmagazine.net\/) a local non-profit publication in Salt Lake City with a focus on \u201cresources for creative living\u201d. \u00a0Catalyst readers don\u2019t realize this, but my environmental news is based on an information literacy model to teach citizen engagement using policy as an entry point to activism and systemic change. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The links below show some of my own interests and activities that relate to sustainability. \u00a0My personal focus has been on collection development to support sustainability and on libraries fostering citizen engagement. \u00a0Other SustainRT members have other passions, and as Coordinator I would work to integrate our diverse voices and interests into a larger vision of libraries helping to create a more equitable, healthy, and economically viable society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Selected Sustainability Articles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Brunvand.
